Germany began their Group F campaign with a slender defeat at the hands of world champions France. Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels put through his own net to give the French team the lead in the first quarter of the match and the Germans never really recovered. Germany were lucky not to lose more than 1-0 against France.

The defeat to France in their Euro 2020 tournament opener on home soil meant that the Germans had to step up their game in the second match against Portugal and they did just that though they had to come from behind to get their first win.

Germany started the match with the Portugal on the front foot and were unlucky to lose the first goal to their opponents thanks to thestrike from Cristiano Ronaldo from close range. The Juventus attacker finished off a breakaway move. Germany recovered from that early setback to score four goals and win the game 4-2 to record their first victory of the ongoing Euro 2020 tournament.

The win over the European champions on home soil ensured that the Germans moved closer to a place in the last 16 of the tournament ahead of their final group clash with the Hungarians.
